From The Archives: Chubby Turner takes PCCHA Futurity in “Tie Breaker”

Only ten days after Chubby Turner and Sans Peach had won a tie-breaking cutting futurity sponsored by the Oregon Cutting Horse Association (PCCHA), they were again in the same situation.

Sponsored by the Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association, the second annual futurity held at Rancho Remuda, Clements, California, October 28 – November 2, the futurity featured two go’s, a semi-finals and finals. Sans Peach, by Sanctuary and owned by Stu Gildred of Santa Ynez, CA., ridden by Chubby Turner, has a 288 score after the finish of the first two go’s, while Cal Cuero, by Cal Bar and owned by Regress-Bergan Farms of Estacada, Oregon, ridden by Dick Hardy, was a half point ahead with a 288 ½. Tivio’s Torsion Bar, who is by Tivio Bar and owned by Dell and Carol Bell, Palo Cedro, CA., and ridden by Dell, finished the preliminary go’s with the highest score of 295.5.

In the Semi-Finals Sans Peach scored a 145, while Cal Cuero finished with a score of 144. Ruby Lynx, owned by James Ross, Palo Cedros, CA., ridden by Dell Bell, had made the highest score in the Semi-Finals, a 146.5.

With 12 horses going to the Finals, both Cal Cuero and Sans Peach scored a 145.5. In work-off competition, Chubby Turner came out on top, but both received a Championship trophy saddle.

With 112 entries in the 6-day event, third place went to Doc’z High Noon, owned by Jim Carson of Williams Lake, B. C., ridden by Gary Bellenfant. Doc’z High Noon, by Doc’s Zinfandel, scored a 290 for his first two go’s, a 144 in the Semi-Finals and a 145 in the Finals.

Scoring 144.5 in Final competition for the fourth place was Sugar Wick, owned by Dick Winger of Davis, CA., ridden by Greg Ward. Sugar Wick by Sugar Vandy scored 288 for his first two go’s, and a 144 in the Semi-Finals.

Fifth and sixth places in the Finals were split by Tivio’s Torsion and Sassy Jay, by Sassy Doc, owned by Mike and Georgia Mowery, Phoenix, AZ., ridden by Georgia Mowery.

Seventh and eighth spots were also split by San Peppy Snoot (by Mr. San Peppy), owned by Jay Rooker, Yerington, NV., ridden by Jack Adams and Two Spot Doc (by Dee Bar Doc), owned by Wesley, W. Swyers, Hood River, Oregon, ridden by John Hoyt.

Star Dee Barred (by Doc’s Star Barred), owned by Jim and Petsy Paul, San Miguel, CA., ridden by Jim Paul was ninth and Ruby Lynx (by Doc N Willy), was tenth.

Freckolena, by Doc O’Lena, owned and ridden by Stu Gildred, was eleventh and Doc’s Dudat, by Doc’s Pepper Bar, owned and ridden by Randy Lynn of Sacramento, CA. was twelfth.

With fourteen Non-Pro entries, the winner was determined by the total score of the first two go’s. Doc’s Dudat and Randy Lynn, with a score of 291, won the first place title and the beautiful championship trophy saddle. Runner-up was Stu Gildred and Freckolena.

Judges for this year’s futurity were Edd Botton of Asher, OK., Kenny Patterson of Pineville, MO., Pat Earnhart of Hernando, MS., and as alternate, Fick Knight of Cottonwood, CA.

Sans Peach was named the West Coast Supreme Futurity Champion after winning both the Oregon and Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association Futurities, making the Finals in the Northwest Cutting Horse Association (NWCHA) Futurity in Walla Walla, WA., and the Semi-Finals of the California Cutting Horse Association Futurity. The champion is determined by the best 3 finishes out of 4 events held by the NWCHA, OCHA, PCCHA and CCHA.
