The first few horse shows of the year are always the coldest and possibly some of the most exciting. After the futurities wrap up during the previous year, it’s exciting to find out if horse’s maturity and strength will bring them even more consistent success. For Breykin Bad, that might just be the case.
The now 5-year-old struggled with illness in 2023 and would recover to win The Cattlemen’s 4-year-old Open Championship. He also made the finals at the National Cutting Horse Association Super Stakes and the NCHA Summer Spectacular.
According to EquiStat, the son of 2015 NCHA Open Futurity Champion Stevie Rey Von, won $138,829 during 2023 and 2024. His dam, Sweet Abra (by Abrakadabracre) was the second highest leading Western Performance dam from January 1, 2019 through July 10, 2024 according to the 2025 QHN Stallion Register and Breykin Bad is one of her highest earners.
In Abilene there is only one preliminary round to qualify for the finals, Galyean and Breykin Bad struggled with picking apart some of the cattle in the preliminary round but had better luck in the finals.
“We were just grateful to be there [in the finals], and I was just lucky enough to get smooth cuts on him,” Galyean said. “That was pretty much the difference between the finals and the go round, we were just able to get our cows cut smooth and let the horse go to work.”
For Galyean’s and his efforts in Abilene, the duo will take home $15,000 for owner/breeder Fults Ranch LTD. Their 225 score bested the horses tying for the reserve championship by three points.
“Because the horse is so outstanding if you are smooth about your execution and you’re lucky enough to pick the right cows that will help you present your horse. He’s such an outstanding horse that he’s going to score high,” Galyean said.
He wanted to thank his wife Ashley for getting the horse prepared and taking care of him. The Fults were also due thanks for trusting Galyean with such an outstanding stallion. Moving forward, Galyean plans to show Breykin Bad at many shows this spring and over the next two years.
Abilene Runners-UpWelsey Galyean, riding Nineteen 42 (Hottish x Lil Rattler x Dual Rey) scored a 222 and tied with Tarin Rice on Quintan (Im Countin Checks x Quintan Blue x Mecom Blue). Both accomplished pairs will take home $9,750 for their efforts.
Although the Reserve Champion horses are a year apart in age and out of vastly different sires, they do have one interesting thing in common. Their dams. While Lil Rattler has 11 performing offspring on record and Quintan Blue has 17, they are both $1.4 Million Dams. They’re successes in the show pen were legendary, but both are producing the next generation of great cutting horses.
