DATE POSTED:March 14, 2024

Brian Unroe, from Gallipolis, Ohio, and his trusted equine partner, V Eight Fulla CD (High Brow CD x Fulla Looks x Dual Rey), affectionately known as Casper, clinched victory at the 2024 National Cutting Horse Association Eastern Nationals, presented by the 6666 Ranch. The event, held from March 1 to 8 in West Monroe, Louisiana, saw the dynamic duo secure the top spot with a score of 217, earning a check for $4,754.98.

Unroe, with around 3 1/2 years of experience in the cutting circuit, shared insights into his journey with Casper, a 7-year-old gelding by High Brow CD.

“Casper is a special kind of horse. When we bought him over a year ago, he wasn’t originally for sale. We had tracked him and owned his half-brother. We approached the owner and ended up making the purchase,” Unroe remarked.

Reflecting on their stellar performance at the Eastern Nationals, Unroe expressed his satisfaction with Casper’s consistency throughout the competition.

“Casper made all four of his finals at the Eastern, securing three top 10 finishes. He’s a solid horse, and I felt confident that we had what it takes to win,” he said.

Having previously competed at the Eastern Nationals, Unroe noted the significance of finally securing victory after several attempts.

“This was my third trip to the Eastern, and I felt I finally had a horse good enough to win it,” he explained.

Unroe emphasized his consistency and adaptability in every show when asked about his approach to competition.

“I maintain the same mindset whether at a weekend show or a higher-level event,” he stated. Consistency is key, and I let the run happen, focusing on executing our game plan.”

Despite the intense competition, Unroe highlighted the camaraderie and shared passion among fellow competitors as a standout aspect of the event.

“Win or lose, it’s always enjoyable to compete at this level and be part of the cutting community,” Unroe remarked.

As Unroe and Casper celebrate their well-deserved victory, they thanked their support team, including herd help, trainers, and veterinarian Mike Boven. “It takes a team effort to succeed in this sport,” Unroe acknowledged. “I’m thankful for the dedication and contributions of everyone involved.”

In a close competition, NCHA Vice President Barnwell Ramsey of Huntersville, North Carolina, riding Reyzurbetsonthiscat (Bet Hesa Cat x Ariel Rey x Dual Rey), emerged as the Reserve Champion, scoring 216, earning $3,918.68 in prize money.
