Carolyn Edson and CR Catty Lights cruise over $100,000

DATE POSTED:October 23, 2024

CR Catty Lights had big goals at the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Snaffle Bit Futurity. The mare, owned by Carolyn Edson, was showing in the Open divisions as well as the Non-Pro Boxing futurity.

Edson and CR Catty Lights (CR Highlight x ARC Catty Dual x Dual Pep) had major success in the Boxing Futurity marking a 210 in the rein work, a 213 in the herd and a 215.5 on their preliminary boxing to earn a 638.5 composite.

Edson purchased the mare as a yearling and has been excited to show her since.

“I started riding her myself in July. So we just started working cattle when we got here,” Edson explained. “I’ve let professionals do their work and I ride pretty much every day. I have a bridle horse that I ride.”

Edson’s EquiStat record begins in the year 2000 with $15 earned at the Texas Classic Reining. Since then, she’s taken up boxing. She travels to a few NRCHA major shows and earns winnings at a rate of a couple hundred dollars per show. Until now.

She marked a 216.5 on her big brown mare during the boxing futurity finals to win a check for $6,000, effectivly pushing her EquiStat record over $100,000.

“I like to ride probably four or five days a week and I drive the lawnmower the rest of the time,” Edson said of her extensive riding career.

CR Catty Lights didn’t fare quite as well in the Intermediate or Open Futurity under the guidance of Garrett Cooper, marking a 638 composite (212 herd, 216 rein, 210 cow) and narrowly missing the finals. But Edson is happy with her Center Ranch-bred mare nonetheless.

“She’s very sweet. She wants to be in your pocket all the time. She loves, she just loves you,” Edson said.

She wanted to thank Baldus Horsemanship and Garrett Cooper for all of their wonderful help leading up to her big win.
