Sixes Pick Euthanized at the age of 26

DATE POSTED:December 10, 2024

The 6666 Ranch announced the loss of Sixes Pick, a legendary stallion in the ranch horse industry. On Dec. 4, he was peacefully laid to rest due to complications from colic.

The decision was not made lightly.

“Despite extensive medical efforts, his condition worsened rapidly. We made the kindest decision to euthanize him, prioritizing his comfort and well-being above all else,” said Dr. Canaday, 6666 Ranch Horse Division Manager and Resident Veterinarian.

Bred by Burnett Ranches and foaled in 1998, Sixes Pick was sired by the legendary Tanquery Gin and out of the mare Natural Pick, by Tenino Badger. He made history as the inaugural American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Versatility Ranch World Champion in 2008, setting the standard for a competition that showcases the trainability, athleticism, and all-around working abilities of ranch horses.

Following his retirement from competition, Sixes Pick returned to the 6666 Ranch to stand to the public. The sire of 728 horses, his progeny were widely sought after as ranch horses but with 48 money-earners they consistently demonstrated their value in rodeo and Western performance disciplines from versatility ranch, barrel racing, roping, and even jumping. His top performers include Take A Pick, AQHA World Champion Versatility Ranch Horse Cowboy and AQHA High Point Cowboy Versatility Ranch Horse Stallion as well as PRCA/WPRA performer and National Finals Rodeo qualifier Frenchmans Pick.

There is no doubt that Sixes Pick’s contributions to the ranching and equine industries are immeasurable.

“It is never easy to lose a horse but losing Sixes Pick was especially hard. He leaves behind an enduring legacy as a champion, a powerful sire and a beloved member of the 6666 Ranch Family,” said Drr. Canaday.

“He was a symbol of the legacy and tradition of ranching excellence and embodied everything we strive for in our breeding program. He will be greatly missed but forever remembered,” Dr. Canaday concluded.

Earlier this year, the 6666 Ranch also lost Playin Attraction (Playin Stylish x Ginnin Attraction x Tanquery Gin).
